I think that's what is known as an English Pastoral. The Beatles were very good at them, and Oasis have had some success with them too. A Whiter Shade of Pale has a slightly religious feel and also reminds me of Dvorak's New World Symphony in parts. I think Rock Ballad sums it up fairly well, though.

Well it was played on the pop/rock stations back in the 60's and 70's. By today's standards it would be classified as classic rock. That's the radio station you hear it on now.

The Moody Blues were considera rock band in the 60's today they probably classify this song as "oldie or classic rock".

psychadelic rock. Today we would not think of this as a rock song but at the time(1967) this is a psychadelic rock song the first of many that would follow over the next several years.
