We're young, we're gothic, and we're going to Chicago! Could someone please suggest some unique, "off the beaten path" things for us to do and see? We are looking for fun, casual dining, music, odd stores, culture--anything aside from the standard tourist fare.

Well first of all there are tons of amazing bars downtown. The Alley is a great store on Clark St. for anybody into gothic apparel. The sears tower is always good if you haven't been there. There are lots of raves and nightclubs. I don't know if you guys smoke the herbals or etc but there's plenty of that around. We live in the suburbs about 20 miles out. I recommend coming out this way. There's anything and everything you want. If you need help email me at breynn@sbcglobal.net.

1. Go to Uncle Fun's on Belmont (west). It's a toy store that has all of these cools little trinkets, gadgets, old toys that you haven't seen for a while, corny new stuff, some weird books, etc.
http://www.unclefunchicago.com/

2. Go to Weeds Bar (1555 N. dayton ave.) particularly on Monday night for their poetry night. Some of the strangest, funny, scary poetry you will hear. Write something and bring it down! Or try poetry at The Green Mill on Sunday nights (http://www.greenmilljazz.com/poetryslam.html). Not as out-on-the-edge as Weeds but still fun.

3. Go to Neo's for late night dancing. It's pretty much the goth capital of Chicago (http://www.neo-chicago.com/)

4. ... or try Exit on North ave., the punk HQ (http://www.exitchicago.com/). They have Bondage-A-Go-Go on Thursday nights. And they used to do a thing where if you chained yourself to the bar, you get to drink free all night.

5. The Smut and Eggs breakfast at Twisted Spoke (http://www.twistedspoke.com/). It's porn movies and breakfast!!! Actually the "smut" part doesn't refer to the porn but the black, gummy-ish part of an ear of corn up around the tassel (It's called corn smut). It's considered something of a delicacy. They cook it up and serve it.

6. The Red Line tap up north around Morse and Lunt. They book a lot of punk bands now and seem to get a good-sized regular crowd.

7. The Neo-Futurists stage show (http://www.neofuturists.org/toomuchlight.htm). Their regular late-night weekend show, called Too Much Light makes the Baby Go Blind, is 30 plays in 60 minutes. Actually just members of the theater group doing monologues and scenes. But there's always a big line around the block.

8. Annoyance Theater (http://www.annoyanceproductions.com/). They're a few doors down from the Green Mill and just opened up a new HQ. They're a comedy theater and their current production is "Splatter Theater" where they perform 13 bloody deaths on stage. It's disturbing and funny. They have a special Halloween show coming up... There's also a new Indian restaurant that just opened up next door to them. And just a few doors down is a cool bookstore called Shake, Rattle and Read....

9. Ragstock (http://www.ragstock.com/index.html) is a new/used clothing place that has some funky stuff. The website has a little indication of what they have.

That's all I can think of right now.
