I do contracting work for this mkt segment i.e. those gits who never come round & use your toilet. Ur annoyance in my opinion is down to a nos of points. Councils only have a certain amount of money to spend i.e. items of repair get prioritized so minor problems r forgotten go to the back of the cue & sometimes expectance is on tenants to do the work. Councils are forced to spend money on items instructed by gvt / EU & they wont cut this money 4 anything as nothing would be repaired. Many Council properties are built cheaply with bad materials / design. (I.e. profit margins for contractors v.tight so corners cut etc to make profits. ie you get what pay for.) This leads to bad design & bad workmanship. They don't see the longterm pic. They see a yr budget, don't listen to contractors views as much & try to screw everyone for a cheap deal. Hence poor service evolves & clear pritorisation to repairs. They are not prepared to pay or do it right. 'Quick fix' get in power, lovely jubbly. Council's have poor mgt & 'jobserve' ethos as they care more about if someone speaks a diff language hence when u ring up why 'should I care?' comes back. Many Councils are feeling the reprocussions of the poor building qualities as after 40 yrs much of the stock is going wrong as never maintained & they cannot cope. Thus unload to Housing Associations private landlords to do their dirty work. All in all the situation is getting better as HA's r taking up the stock & offer a much more serious / professional apporach. It is an industry v.much on do it right or don't do it at all as your pay for it double. Which Council's never realise. In Council's defense if they repaired every problem with their houses on the dot within a wk there would be no more money 4 anything else. To be honest modern day building is not g8 in all sectors & your never get a house like you did before the war for strength, sturdiness & root longitivity.

Your council should ensure your repairs are done within a specific time frame - its a legal requirement. If they don't you should be able to complain and seek compensation. They can be held to account if they are not fulfilling their obligations. They also normally contract out to contractors who do repairs in batches rather than one at a time. Their is also the issue of payment - council's are bureacracies and often tradespeople will not get paid for a lengthy period by them. They may also have gone for the cheapest and not neccessarily the most reliable option.

I wish I knew the answer to your question cos it's not funny. An elderly lady who lives in a Council house near me had to wait 12 months for a dangerous light switch to be repaired. Had she touched it she would have been electrocuted.

They are to busy repairing council houses to put the Illegals in!!! But why should YOU be proud to be a Council house tennant???? Surely the original idea was to help people get on their feet!!!!! That's why when 'Maggie' Gave you the rights to buy your house for nothing, all you 'penniless' w*nkers were able to double glaze, have driveways put in and have 'stone cladding' applied!!! That's why Spain is now full of whinger's going on about how bad life was back home.....(Without learning Spanish I might add)!!!! I personally think that especially with the NOW housing shortage that people should be means tested on an annual basis!! Why the FCUK should you hoard a much needed property to hand on to you're next of kin (LIKE YOU F'ING OWN IT)!!!!!! while the rest of us have to pay to keep scum like you alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!Meanwhile much more needy BRITISH people are sleeping rough because they DON'T QUALIFY!!!!!

Probably hoping to sell it off to private landlords and transfer the problem of repairs to them.

They tend to slow work down for budgetary reasons but you can be sure they don't slow down their expenses.
