I have been working as a Masters Level Social Worker for the past 14 years, and you hit it right on the head with this question! I truly believe that the social welfare policies that liberals so proudly brag about inventing are just a modern day version of slavery. Yep, you all heard it! Welfare keeps the truly poor individuals dependent on the government thus creating slavery. AND it allows the truly LAZY to live a very lazy life off of the hard working taxpayers' money. Without breaking confidentiality I once had a client who had 16 children (14 of whom were born with full blown AIDS, not just HIV positive). It was our money, yours and mine, that paid for these beautiful children to die a horribly painful death and all alone! I was forbade to speak with her about sterilization (she didn't beleive in birth control or safe sex) and if you asked her why she had so many children, she would repeat verbatum .... "everytime [she] has a child the government increases my check by $250.00! Last month I was able to get cable!" But the kids never had clean clothes, or food, nor were they clean...I;m sure you get the picture! Long story short....we need to help the truly poor in our country but the truly lazy need a kick in the pants. Give a man a fish and you feed him for the night. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for the rest of his life. Great question. Peace.

PS I come from a stanch conservative family in New England. I was born a republican and really had no choice (kidding) Can you imagine how much fun I had when I announced to Dad that I was getting my Masters degree in Social Work? He literally turned the strangest color of purple! But I did it because I figured what better way to affect change than to learn about what it is that you want to change from the inside out! Again, thanks for the intellectual stimulation!

What kind of distinction are you trying to make here? Your question doesn't make any sense. Since you are stating that liberals and conservatives (EVERYONE) want to help the truly needy, do you really think that liberals gladly support those that abuse the system? This is ridiculous! The liberal stance on this issue is not "Everyone on board the welfare train, quit your jobs and over-burden the tax system!" But that welfare is necessary because the very poor and extremely disadvantaged exist, and we have a MORAL obligation to help. Of course cheaters exist (though not to the extent many conservatives would put forth, this has been proved) but liberals do not condone that. Again, what are you arguing here? You didn't think this through very well, did you?

I guess this means that we are ALL lazy regardless of race, creed, or sex because the taxes we pay go to many things. For example:
-Defense spending: This includes military salaries, reenlistment bonuses, etc. I don't think it would be appropriate to call these brave men and women lazy.

-Schools: Are all of the teachers, janitors, school bus drivers, etc considered lazy?

-Highways: our taxes go to repairing our highways and paying the salaries of those who do that work.

Our taxes also go towards paying the salaries of our elected officials who I feel are truly lazy and totally undeserving of the money they make. In fact, the service they give us is similar to the service received in a fast food restaurant. I think we should give these people a fast food workers salary.

I hate paying double or triple the percentage out of my meager salary, that the rich and large corporations pay on their massive incomes.

I hate that most of my tax dollars go to pay for illegitimate wars and ear marked projects for powerful republicans in appropriations.

I hate that millions of public dollars get spent on right wing propaganda.

I would rather spend the .001% of the national budget on "lazy" people than saddle my children with the billions of dollars of debt racked up every month by this administration in ill advised attempts to further American imperialism that only make America less safe.

According to a previous question on this site, the war on Iraq costs the US $2billion each week. With apopulation of 296 million that means each citizen is funding this at $7 per week. That would be a big tax saving for the working classes under the Democrats.

Lazy people should never be helped period. And they come from all walks of life, and cross all political boundaries. Are you happy that billions upon billions of tax payers dollars are being spent in the Middle East by an administration that refuses to accept responsibilty for there inept and horrible planning?

Did you question the Bush administration when 8.8 billion dollars of tax payers money just happened to go missing in Iraq? I'm guessing not.

Yes, corporations are responsible for 2/3 of welfare, yet do nothing to deserve it. Most private citizens are in need and we have a moral obligation to help them. I like your question. We need to stop giving money to companies that don't need it and give it to people who do. It looks like the majority of people understand this. Do you think Jesus would want us to help those in need (even children who unfortunately have "lazy" parents) Children are our future if we won't help them we do not have much of a future. Also, the system needs work as it is difficult for people to work low paying jobs and are forced to give up medical benefits because they work. how does this make sense? I think people would be able to work more if they could make decent money and keep benefits they need.

Probably as much as I like paying taxes that serve the RICH. Unfortunately, the free-rider problem is an economics dilemma that occurs with whatever system you put into place. I'm not one for throwing the baby out with the bathwater, and would rather help as many people overcome poverty (and the associated social ills like poor health, infant mortality, early death due to preventable illnesses etc.) The world is interconnected so closely that it just makes sense to help your neighbor--and in turn you help yourself.

We need to examine this question a little-
Truly poor- almost 20% of the US now falls below the poverty level
Lazy- does not want to work, not referring to the 5% that are unemployed or the 6% that have fallen of the unemployment roles for lack of work
Seems your LAZY must be referring to people who are working (corporations) who get the largest share of government handouts!

I really hate giving money to profitable corporations-- Corporate Welfare. They should be getting by on FREE ENTERPRISE and self-reliance! And that amounts to a LOT more than the pittance we give to "lazy people" on welfare. Your perception is skewed.

I also resent the $2 billion that the government gives to Fundamentalism in Bush's "Faith-Based Initiative". As Jefferson wrote, "To compel a man to furnish contributions of funds for the propagation of [religious] opinions with which he disagrees is sinful and tyrannical".
