We need information on the specific type of router, the settings are different for pretty much every model.
What you're looking for, though, are security settings. Use (for example) WEP 128-bit encryption (normally in a drop-down box), and type in a password of 26 hexadecimal characters (0 through 9 and A through F. Example of a reasonable key: 011a223b344c556d677e889f90)
After applying the settings, you will then have to type the network key into all of your wirelessly connected computers to let them access the network.

A chap came to our department with a wireless router and I quote- "A friend said don't even try take it to someone who does!"
As above many router have different interfaces. In general.
1. Connect a computer to an Ethernet port on the router.
2. If its standard then you will be given an IP address.
3. type IPCONFIG at a command prompt. you should see an address like this 192.168.0.1
4. In the browser put the address found in 3
5. You should be prompted for an user and password, usually admin and admin or password.
6. Once in you can configure all your WEP from there. Its just a matter of following the wizards or manual.
These are only guidelines every router is different! If lost save the frustration and pay someone.

it all depends on the make of the router you are using.
but the basic setup is like this..
connect modem to WAN/Internet port of the router.
connect laptop to port (1,2,3,4 - any) of the router.
make sure you get this connection online.. which means router is configured to work with modem..
then check the address of your router.. (from the user guide)
open that address on internet explorer and log in using the routers password.
there will be an option for wireless in the router..
change your ssid (nertwork name) to something which you want.
security can be WEP 64 or WEP 128 bit or WPA
WPA is higher end , but is not supported by all comps , so make sure your comp supports it.
when with WEP 64 bit - enter a 10 char number where it says network key or use a passphrase and generate the 10 char key.
same applies with WEP 128 bit - this generates a 26 char key instead of 10.
for wpa you can use a password of 8-63 chars of your choice.
then on the wless comp - you should select your network name and connect to it with the key.
;-)
