It seems like the conservatives on Y answers think that all poor people are lazy and stupid. Do you folks know any real poor people? Have you ever gone to a real food cupboard? Have you volunteered at a homeless shelter?

I'm having a hard time understanding the animosity towards people who are poor.

Help me out.

I would consider myself as conservative and I don't think that *all* poor people are lazy and or stupid.

If you are basing your assumption that conservatives feel this way based on what you see on these message boards then please don't. Alot of what you see on these message boards are immature individuals who are misinformed, ill tempered and just plain ignorant. They enjoy slinging mud because it gives them a rush. It makes them feel more significant and gets them attention. I am not talking about only Republicans/Conservatives. There are multitudes of Democrats/Liberals who display their fair share os this type of behavior as well.

Most mature Republicans and Conservatives want to *solve* the problems of the impoverished. To do so they don't believe that just throwing money at them is the way to do this. We need soutions not just bandaids to the problems. Caring about the people of this country isn't something exclusive to Democrats. I am going to say one thing that is going to anger the vast majority of Democrats and Liberals here. Who is a large portion of the voting base for the Democrat Party? The very people you are talking about, the poor. The Democratic Party will *never* fix the problems facing the impoverished in this country today. The Democratic Party *needs* the poor to *need* them. They need the less fortunate to depend on the Democrat Party to keep their power base in place. That is the difference between the Conservative and Liberal stance. The Conservative Republicans want to give the impoverished a hand up. The Liberal Democrat base want to give the impoverished a hand out. Bringing them out of poverty means losing a very powerful voting base. You can't deny that.

Conservatives like Liberals care about the impoverished. Especially the children. It isn't their fault, their lot in life. There is no reason for one child to be hungry in this country today. There is no reason that one child should not have a bed to sleep in at night. There is no reason that one child *can not* have medical care if need be. All these needs can be met. The programs are in place and there to be utilized. There is not one responsible Republican that would knowingly stand in the way of these needs being met. If there are people who are going without the basic needs to survive it isn't due to the Republicans.

The animosity you see from some so called Republicans or Conservatives has nothing to do with the issues themselves. They have to do with political game playing. AGAIN... this is not something that is exclusive to Republicans. Democrats and Liberals play this game as well and rather well.

This political game playing that runs rampant on these message boards is a symptom of the problem that is crumbling our country from the inside out today.

Have I gone to a real food cupboard? I oversaw the running of one for approximately 10 years. Have I volunteered at a homeless shelter? Not exactly a homeless shelter but a shelter for abused women and children.

I don't detest anybody. I detest what is happeing in our country though. Somewhere we lost the unity that made our country the greatest nation of the world. If we don't do something to come to a consensus on both sides of the political fence it is only going to get worse and less stable. I hope people realize it before it is too late.

Thanks for caring.... As a Conservative I care too, as do most of my counterparts. .

Reality Check #1: Conservatives realize that the backbone of America is its legal citizens. Conservatives do not like the throw away society that we have today... it is repulsive

True conservatives are not dedicated to keeping anyone poor, re: taxation at every turn, high interest rates, open borders that allow illegal aliens to enter the USA and STEAL from our poor and our system, by lowering wages and burdening our infrastructure.

I have a hard time understanding why you would think any conservative has animosity towards the poor.... or maybe you think it is because conservatives are not in favor of using other people's money (stolen via taxation) to create and fund useless programs that help very few people, but hurt many.

Those who truly show animosity towards the poor and who are the real enemy of the poor, are those who support illegal aliens and guest worker programs.... along with amnesty and birthright citizenship for children of illegal alien/criminals (which is tantamount to a reward for breaking the law)....

On the other hand, we have another enemy of the poor, those who import and flood our retail shelves with poor quality merchandise(JUNK) from foreign countries whose wages are very low compared to ours. Merchandise that will not last very long and has to be replaced continuously.... what a concept.... keep people employed by manufacturing junk products.... what a beautiful mind that thought up that rotten concept.

Being poor is not something that can be changed by throwing money around carelessly, even if we evenly distributed the wealth, within a short period of time, it would be back in the same hands as before the distribution..... those that are more enterprising and capable, will end up re-earning their money back. Most of those that aren't, would spend themselves back to the same level of affluence at which they were previously situated. Unless people think communism/socialism is the answer, then we can all share the misery of a government that robs everyone, while the elitists enjoy what they can steal.

Conservatives do not react with emotion and feel good, ie: throw money at problems... other people's money.... they see reality and try to correct problems with the least expense and the least government involvement... they prefer to see those having the problems be the ones who are the most involved in trying to correct it.

Wrong! I'm very conservative, Black, a Committee person & have only a $100 in my bank account. Lazy people are lazy. They stand on my corner and sell durgs rather than get up and get a real job. Have I gone without? Yes! I have more bills than eggs in my fridge. We don't have animosity. Instead we want them to get their act together and help themself out of the problems they make for themselves. Having 3 kids at 22 with not husband will make you poor. Droping out of school, will make you poor. Liberals for years have made steps to encourage that behaviour, not curb it. Welfare gave more money if you had more kids & did not marry. That led to a break down of the family structure and has led 2 generations of fatherless, directionaless youth. Who wind up making a cycle of poverty. The Ged is not seen as a crutch. Why go to school & study when I can get one test and skate by. Thus school spend time babysitting instead of teaching. So to answer your question, no. We detest failure to try.... Keep you nose clean, study hard, lose the baggy pants and hip hop crap & you can be be a sucess in life. Not a slave to the system .

No, conservatives don't detest poor ppl. They detest the Imperial Federal Government robbing them of their earned money through taxes to theoretically 'help' the poor. The facts are - a) government is not authorized to 'help' anyone, b) in approx 70 years of government 'helping the poor' there are more poor ppl than ever and c) if i as an individual desire to help someone by giving them money then that is fine, but if the government forcefully takes what i've earned and gives it to someone else, that is wrong. In fact that is the very defintion of slavery - forcefully using the production of one individual for the benefit of another individual.

They do not.

I am a moderate conservative (read my Q&A, I'm not lying!), and I have volunteered at soup kitchens, and helped feed and clothe the poor in Portland, Oregon, Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, and San Francisco, California.

Also, I LIVED on the streets for a few months when I was eighteen. I saw a lot of drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. I DIDN'T see a lot of homeless people attempting to do anything about their situation.

My sister is poor. My mom is poor. BOTH of them detest lazy people. They are poor, not because they're lazy, but because of other certain factors.

Conservatives detest having to pay to support people who are poor because they're lazy, NOT people who are simply poor.

Quit being judgemental.

This question requires some historical background in order for you to understand this.

The early American Protestants believed in a very strong work ethic. They deemed laziness, sloth, and being dirty, as something evil.

Now, what later became known as the Republican Party, adopted some of the Protestant beliefs of their work ethic.

The Republicans believe that the human spirit can and should overcome all obstacles that stand in the way of leading a good, clean, and productive life.

I am sure you know of someones story who went through hell, but kept on trying and eventually became a success (Think Oprah!). The human will to succeed, to improve, and to make something of their lives has the power to lift those to greater heights.

Now, that does not mean to become rich...only successful, sometimes they are one and the same, but not always. Tesla was successful, but Edison made all the money.

Anyway, so to answer your question, they have an animosity towards them because they think that they lack the human spirit and will to work their way out of poverty.

It is amazing to watch someones will and human spirit drive to greatness. Look around you, and you will see and hear stories of people rising above their circumstances to do something with their lives.

Maybe if the liberals stopped shipping money off to the 3rd world, we could afford to help our own poor first!
