Hey Alice this one I would have done by a pro. plumber- too risky with the gas or electric. - and this way you can blame someone else if you have a fire or get flooded-

Copper is the best, but expensive. They do make some really good plastic pipes. Check your local plumbing supply shop.

Not the big box shops, but your local Ma - Pa operation. At least they have a idea of what is going on.

that would depend on the piping through the rest of your house. use the same pipe to repair/ replace the water heater to make it easier to tie them together. the most common is copper

Call a plumber....The water lines are copper and soldered together. You can do it yourself if you have the experience. Not an easy task.

HOW- make hole at desired spot, get a two side threaded coupling- insert in hole- screw on the washers and nut from inside- screw on the tap/pipe on outside- lol. over
