What are your thoughts on Christopher Columbus? I used to think he was a great guy, until I actually read about him. Only to find out that HE was the savage!! Not the Indians. I read in an article, that what he observed about the Taino Indians was that they bathed often, great farmers and were peaceful people. He went on saying that they would make great servants. What a bastard!!!!

properly for one, we began celebrating Columbus Day decrease back formerly the generic individual knew something concerning the mass homicide and enslavement of Indians by making use of Columbus and his group. 2d, Columbus wasn't any diverse or any worse than the different ecu decrease back then. They have been all unbelievably racist and violent by making use of present day standards, and that they actually did not think of of the Indians as genuine human beings. that doesn't excuse his strikes, in spite of the fact that it a minimum of explains them. third, mutually as Columbus Day remains on the calendar, it is not "celebrated" anymore - colleges are open, there are not parades (a minimum of not everywhere i've got ever lived), etc. Hitler, on the different hand, replaced into considered as evil for the time of his time, as properly as on the instant. He does not have been considered somewhat evil had he ruled Germany in the 1400s however.

Most of the world was pretty barbarous in those days. Including the indigenous peoples of the Americas. While I don't endorse the conquest or enslavement that followed Columbus' landing, I don't think it serves any purpose the personalize the blame.

Actually, my problem with the lionization of Columbus is that he was largely the beneficiary of dumb luck. The commonly held belief that he knew the world was round when everyone else thought it flat is a myth. Every educated person in Europe knew that the earth was a sphere. That knowledge was already nearly 2,000 years old, dating back to the ancient Greeks. The reason every European monarch but Ferdinand and Isabella refused to back his mission is that their advisors knew (correctly) that the westward oceanic distance from Europe to Asia was much farther than Columbus, using outdated and horribly inaccurate calculations, thought. What no one knew (the Norse who had landed 500 years earlier kept it largely to themselves) was that there was a huge land mass in the middle of that vast ocean -- the Americas. In fact, Columbus went to his death believing that he had reached Asia, specifically India, which is why we have to this day the rather ridiculous habit of referring to the indigenous peoples of the Americas as "Indians."

You're nuts, and as a poissible mestizo you're a hypocrite!
These people were not peaceful, they were busy fighting and killing each other when Colom arrived.
The Spanish allied with the Aztec's enemies to rout them.
The Carribean tribes were being raided by Caribs, who were cannibals! The Tainos made out to be useless servants, and so Africans were imported (hence all the blacks in the carribean today).
The natives are just upset that a dominant culture did a better job of beating them up than they did themselves!
¡Viva Colom!
¡Viva Hernan Cortez!
¡Viva Pizarro!

A day to savor my proud Spanish heritage

Weak culture? Speak Spanish right! Sucka...
Thanks for... burritos?
Ha!
We even invented your cherished tequila!
Not even worth provong the obvious here.

Eres sudaco? Dominican... hmm.. I don't know what to thank you for.. oh yeah, cheap vacation homes that all the Spanish bought up. The reconquest. How's NY? You can thank the Spanish for your black roots.

Times change sweetie! What's right and acceptable in one era isn't necessarily right and acceptable in another era. In Christopher Columbus's day, wrong though it was, slavery was acceptable, and even expected. It wasn't just Columbus who thought that way. Slavery and persecution of other people began way way back, it existed in Jesus day, and lasted for centuries. Fortunately, we have moved past that now. And hopefully no other generation will start it up again. We recognize Christopher Columbus for the good things he did in settling the new world. Unlike Hitler, Columbus wasn't trying to eradicate a whole race of people just because he didn't like them. There's no way you can compare the two.

Yes, the Spanish did great harm to civilization. Not only by hurting the Natives in several countries, but by fueling thte illegal trafficking of slaves from Africa, originally meant to be presents for royalty.

I lived in Spain years ago, and can't be honest if I do not admit that any Spaniard you talk to about this feels regret and wishes that harm would not have been done, even centuries ago.

Now, you talk to some Americans that feel no regrets about the harm done to their natives, censoring new age immigrants, and wonder why...

I just don't want a George Bush day. There is a dictator who massacred innocents too!

Every culture has its people who are not up to good standards. More than who he was as a person is the celebration of his coming to the new world. There are some leaders too who are over celebrated even today and they are murderers, liars and thieves and nothing more.

He was a man of his time and the culture that he came from. How do you think that people will judge you over 600 years from now?

They may be saying that you ate other intelligent and emotionally feeling creatures (cows and chickens) as well as eating their children (eggs and veal) and that you rode around in vehicles that permanently poisoned the ground water and air. When they have tallied the number of intelligent animals you have eaten parts of, who will they compair you to?

Don't judge, least you be judged.

I don't know what has gotten into people attacking our holidays. It seems everyone wants to erase our holidays and make room for some useless holiday. If they want to have a hitler day, let them. It is a fact that different peoples were made for different reasons. Anyone who doesn't like American holidays is free to go live in some other country.

You need to throw away the liberal garbage you've been reading. In fact, have a big bonfire and burn it. Liberals do the same thing with Thomas Jefferson and all of our great patriots. Liberals need to look at their own faults instead of condemning others, especially decent people like Columbus.

I AM GOING TO CELEBRATE COLUMBUS DAY!
