You get on the "property ladder" when you buy your first home. You move up the property ladder buy selling your first property and buy a slightly bigger and better one.

It seems to me owning a property is more important in the UK than in other countries. In Europe many people rent their homes their whole life. Perhaps the old saying "An Englishman's home is is castle" has some truth in it.

A lot of people see buying their home as an investment for their future. Once the mortgage is paid off people are a lot freer in the future to use the money for holidays etc during retirement.

Then after their death their children can sell the house for a few hundred thousand pounds.

It may seem like greed to some to want to buy your own home but the alternative is to pay rent to landlords who are making a ton of money for themselves. Or live in a tent in the woods.
Buying can give you security from not being turfed out by said landlord or having to move every year or so.
Personally, I don't see what is wrong with getting on the housing ladder and investing your hard earned money.

Its like when you buy your first house its quite cheap and u know not very nice mosr fo the time but as u get older and have better job opportunities you climb up the property ladder and are able to move into better houses by using the money for selling your old house...its quite logical really if you think about it.

We've stayed on the bottom rung of the property ladder since we bought our house in 1984, were not materialistic people and a house is the home you make it, I have better things to spend my money on and to do with my time than to try and impress people with a bigger or better house, you can't take the damn thing with you and now we have paid our mortgage off I won't move.
