The Ohio Players sung roller coaster.
The real source of the scream -- and the origins of the rumor -- were explained by Ohio Player Jimmy "Diamond" Williams:
There is a part in the song where there's a breakdown. It's guitars and it's right before the second verse and Billy Beck does one of those inhaling-type screeches like Minnie Ripperton did to reach her high note or Mariah Carey does to go octaves above. The DJ made this crack and it swept the country. People were asking us, 'Did you kill this chick in the studio?' The band took a vow of silence because that makes you sell more records."
As Mr. Williams suggests, mystery and scandal is good for record sales and radio play, so why ruin a good thing by 'fessing up to the truth? Instead, take a "vow of silence" and watch the money roll in.

I think I know what you are asking about, and I hope that this entry is somewhat helpful. What we know to be true is that we have this thing called a consciousness, and it just could be that those things we call ego, spirit, soul, lifeforce, etc. are all just parts of that consciousness. It also appears (at least to me) that our lives are works-in-progress, and maybe what life is about is not looking for an end-point, but, rather to enjoy the journey as much as we can. Life does come with problems, challenges, opportunities, stresses and all the rest, and I'm not sure it's possible to make the ride stop. In fact, we don't know for sure that it stops when we die. From what I can tell, that part of our being that we call the ego is always there, but that doesn't mean that it has to control our lives. If you believe we have free will...and I do...then we get to make choices about how we live our lives. The ego is something like a voice that's a part of our consciousness, and it sometimes seems that our ego is telling us one thing (i.e. "You are getting screwed in this situation.") when the rest of our being is telling us something else. This doesn't mean that listening to our ego is bad, but it can be helpful to recognize it for what it is. Bottom line, I do the best that I can to determine if what I'm doing is a good and loving act, and I do the best I can to move in that direction. Best wishes to you!
