If you love the car and want to keep it then I would suggest joining a BMW club. There are clubs in most metropolitan areas and almost all of them have a computer that plugs right into the driver side port. This will give you a read out of exactly whats wrong. Take the print out to a foreign auto body repair (if in US) and tell them that you only want to fix that specific problem. Ask if the part is in stock, get an estimate on labor time and cost to fix that part, don't pay for any other services. With this aggressive approach you can get your BMW fixed for a fraction of the cost that a dealer will charge you. The BMW club in my area is $25 a year to join. Also BMW's are more user friendly than most people think. My wife can change the oil, replace a headlight, drain and refill the coolant, and replace a blown fuse. That's saying something since she is a girly girl! Anyway do not be afraid to be more involved with maintaining your car. Do not get rid of a great car, get rid of a bad maintenance habit.

Once the manufacturer's free scheduled maintenance expires, BMW, and roughly most German makes, can be costly to upkeep. In terms of finding a less expensive and smaller alternative to the X5, you might want to check out the Acura RDX. It's a new model for the 2007 year with a sporty drive and performance oriented handling and will cost thousands less than an X5.
I've owned many Honda products and have never been disappointed.

X5s are Chav you are making the right decision. How about a 4x4 Porcshe, they ooze style and there are not that many on the road.
