I'm sorry, buddy. I have not had to make such a decision, but I wish you the best of luck with that.

Yes. Many people advised me so when my cat had urinary tract disease and he had surgery and for many months it was not working well. I chose to struggle for every little chance of salvation possible. Fibally I found a vet who was great, and he did the surgery again, when everyone else said it was impossible, and the cat is alive and well now. It's been a year ever since. However, some cases are bound to be less successful. When there is really no hope, and if the animal is in great pain, and he has given up on life itself - doesn't move or eat, stays in a corner waiting to die, and the prognosis of the illness by the vet is 100% fatal, I would consider euthanasia.

I am very much the animal lover. Throughout my life, I've had to make that decision more times than I wanted to. The one that tore me up the worst, was a little Cockapoo dog that I had. I had this dog for twelve of his fourteen years. He was like my kid...25 pounds of very loving, very playful, very rambunctious, very curious energy. During one weekend, he lost his sight. On Monday, I took him to the Doc, who did tests and told me my baby was Diabetic, and that his sugar count was that of an adult human male, and he had no explanation of why he was alive. For a few months we worked on figuring out what he needed, in order to live with Diabetes. As it turned out, he was given a special diet, and I administered two shots of Insulin a day. He lived for two years, after being diagnosed. During those two years, people often asked why I didn't put him down. My standard answer was, "and if YOU were Diabetic and blind, should we kill you too, just because you are?" He lived a full and happy existence during those two years The day I came home, and he didn't greet me with a Yip and a tail wag, was the day I knew something was different. I picked him up, and said all his favorite words, like treat, and go bye-bye, and his only response was to give my face one lick. I knew the time had come. I had made this decision before with other beloved pets, but this one, really did rip my heart right out, and still does.
I still have some heart to share, if you need some.

Oh, sweetie. I'm so sorry. I haven't had to make the decision yet, but it might be coming up sooner than I realized. I really feel for you and your friend. It's such a hard thing to even think about, much less make an active decision about. I know this sounds kooky but maybe you should ask your friend. Verbally tell them what is going on, and say you have this decision to make, and what would they prefer? What do they want? Believe me, they will find a way to let you know. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. If you need anything, or just want to talk, let me know.

I actually just did in July - that is how I found this site actually. I needed something mindless to help me through the pain and you were waiting for me with open arms!
It is a horrible dilemma but remember you loved that pet through the good times and if they are over you can PROVE your love by doing the RIGHT thing. You wouldn't want a person to suffer, our pets are little people in our lives!
You know where to find me if you wanna talk! Love ya!

We did once after someone hit one of our pups and he was paralyzed. He was having trouble breathing because of the paralysis. It is never easy, but I think you need to consider the quality of their life as well as the condition that has brought you to this point.. Are they still enjoying their life? Are they in pain? The owners themselves are the best judge in these cases because they are the ones that love and care for their pets everyday. You can feel when it has become too much for them. I would suggest calling your vet. He should be able to help you keep you pet comfortable no matter what your decision. Best wishes.

Hang in there!

Actually, my mom and family tried to convince me to put my dog to sleep about a month and a half ago. I couldn't make that choice, I knew that when it was her time to go, God wouldn't let her suffer and would take her. Since he passed, I know I made the right choice. Good luck sweetie, this is something you gotta search your heart and your relationship with your pet for the answer... I'm sorry.

No, I havent. I have given a few up for adoption because I was moving, and that was difficult enough.
I have a dog who is approaching 11 next year, and I think about it sometimes and cry. I don't know how I'll ever be able to do it when the time comes.

Yes, I have and it was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. But, I knew that it was the right thing to do. I could no longer help my rabbit and his health was deteriorating so quickly. I could not watch him suffer and knew that it was the right thing to do. A life with horrible health issues is no life at all. It may be hard, but you need to think about your pet. If you love him/her, you will do the right thing. I know it may be hard. I feel for you - good luck.

yes I have. We had a cat for a few years. She had 6 kittens. We would let her out in the mornings to use the bathroom. Before we left for the day we called for her to come back in. She had apparently been hit by a car but could still walk. Her side was dented in. She tried to feed her babies but couldn't. She would bite them and scratch at them because it hurt her. The kittens would not take to a dropper to be fed.
We finally had to put her and the six kittens to sleep. It was very sad.
Also my dad had a dog after mom passed he was the only one there to keep my dad company and his mind occupied. The dog became very agressive and attacked my dad a few times. My dad hated it but he had to put him to sleep. It was one of the hardest things my dad had to do after mom passed away.
