I have a suit I got a while ago, really like the material, but it's 4 buttons and I want to modernize it, make it a 2. Could a good tailor do this, and what would be the expense?

would it be easier to make it a three, I imagine the lapel would be almost similar.

It can be done by a quality tailor. The problem is that the repair may not be completely invisible. Make sure you explain exactly what you expect, and that you are assured what the results will be before you pay. That way, if you are unsatisfied, you won't have to.

It's possible, but not a good idea. The suits are made with specific cuts and lapels for each button type. It probably wouldn't look very good after the alterations. Also, there isn't a way to hide the button holes. Once the hole is made, you can't undo it. You would still have a line there from where the hole was re-sewn.

I suggest you take the pants to the store and match a 2 button jacket in color and fabric to them. If you wait a couple of years, the 4 button will be back in style anyway, and you can wear it again.

Sure its probably possible but is it worth it?
You could probably get a whole new suit for a price the tailor is going to charge you to alter this one.

And I think it would look better and you would be happier with a new one.
A 4-button converted to a 2 button will most likely NOT look as nice as a suit purchased and designed to be a 2 button from the get go...

Anything can be done. However the suit wouldn't look very good since the jacket is designed for 4 buttons. It would probably be cheaper to buy a 2 buttoned jacket in the same fabric/textile as your pants... Sorry

Yes, but it is not reccomended. The line required for a two button is specifically cut for that. My suggestion is to put it back in the closet and wait for it to roll back into fashion again or donate it to Goodwill.
