In theory, it is what the dealer pays for the car. They will tell you stories but remember that they are making money by selling the car for the higher price. They often get incentives for selling cars as well and pay penalties to their company when they don't sell the car fast enough. Depending on the model, you can sometimes get the car cheaper than invoice and still make the dealership happy. Just not as happy as if they made an extra $10k on the deal. Something to condsider, not all sources are accurrate when they post the invoice price.
