how can I take clips from dvd movies for re-editing into documentaries, etc. I normally use imovie 4 editing?

I have tried using my camcorder as a SVideo interface from dvd player to computer but in Britain the camcorders wont allow this due to piracy concerns. I had to resort to filming my mac screen with the camcorder while playing the dvd - there must be a better way! Thanks.
