I totally disagree with jessie. I work in HR and part of my job is recruitment. I will not receive any application without an application letter and will place an employee on the position applied for. The once who get an advantage are the once with an open letter and have various skills matched on their application letter coz I will match them with the available open position. It is vitually important that the cover letter show that you are qualified and what benefit you will bring to the organization. Let it not be long coz an employer has very little time to check through the application letter. Remember a resume without a covering letter is the same as you going to the street with your under clothes only.

As little as possible. Most employers don't even read 'em, and throw them away.
