It's the last war they were in when they were on the winning side.
Think about Korea, Vietnam, Iraq 1, Iraq 2 - all resounding victories, right? Yeah, right.

They left it to the last possible moment to jump in. Prompted largely by Pearl Harbour but also pressure from the Domestic Jewish community and the fact that the Germans had prototype weapons that could hit them. Even production Weapons (V2 Rocket) could have levelled New York if launched from Britain.

Until they were directly threatened themselves, they let Adolf do as he pleased. France, Denmark, The low countries, Norway, Huge parts of the old USSR - the whole lot except Switzerland(neutral) were legitimate casualties of War. They didn't care who was in charge in Europe, 'cos it's just a little disneyland with a few fairytale castles and peasants in it. Even today, many americans think the Shrek movies are what Europe is really like, but few of them could tell you where a Troll comes from. They could never be threatened by Europe. Never. But the swastika's on the map just kept getting closer and closer.

Up until then, all they'd done is "lend" us toy boats and planes. Except it wasn't "lend" it was called "lend-lease", we had to pay for them. They sent us all their old rubbish that was commissioned in WWI and built shiny new stuff for themselves.

They were also convinced that the only nation that could survive was those dirty red commie bastards - the cold-war had already started. If the russkies got their hands on the technology and people at Peenemunde, we'd all be talking Russian today. Look up the architects of the US Space program - don't an awful lot of those names look German to you?

The Americans didn't win WW2, the Nazi's lost it by opening too many fronts and spreading themselves too thinly. They delayed a full-on invasion of England because they wanted us to join them (thus putting an end to the need for a Western Front). Dig out some old war-simulation games based on the political map of the day. UK & Germany are natural allies and unstopable.

But this is not what american history schoolbooks say. They don't like to admit that the primary motivation was self-gain.

Hail to the Chief.

Because the American's are only educated in the positive side of American history (such as it is), and even then, often get misinformed.

Russia would have got to Berlin in WWII, regardless of the US's involvement.

They strengthen the Western fronts in Europe, sure, and did a lot of bombing in conjunction with the RAF (which by this time should more rightly have been called the Air Force Made Up of Brave Men From All Over The World), but the motivation for the americans was simple - beat the Reds to Berlin, and thus, the cold war started.....

Plus of course, being drama queens that can hardly get out of bed in the morning without having to see a "therapist", they feel the need to ***** and whine to get attention!!

That's a vast generalization. I'm American and I've never even cared, let alone spoken of the events of WWII. More than likely we would have been bombed at some point, so when we joined is irrelevant to whether we would have 'bothered'. We would have been bothered at some point.

I only argue with Brits that pick fights with me. Most don't thankfully, but some blame me for Bush and American foreign policy. Irregardless of how I vote, which grassroots efforts I take part in, or my personal beliefs...Bush is my fault. *shrug* Sure, whatever.

I don't know why those that feel that way get so agitated and angry. I've met Americans who get the same way, so I can't say it's only Brits who suffer from this ailment. Perhaps they feel guilt for their own spat of Imperialism and are irritated with ours? Note, I don't approve, yet I do acknowledge. Who knows? We usually despise those that have traits we ourselves carry and wish to ignore.

Who saved the Brits? The only reason Americans and Brits argue so much, is the Brits can't hold their ale. They need to learn how to drink like Americans. The Brits wouldn't have needed America's help if they would just learn how to drink more than a pint without getting drunk. LOL

Well, Pearl Harbor did happen, so we will never know how that would have or have not changed history.

With or without the fact that Pearl did happen, you are ignoring the fact that both Great britain and Russia were working with American military supplies. Officially, before Pearl, Canada and US airmen were flying for Great Britain, against the Nazi's.

It took thje maximum effort of at least three super powers and a half dozen smaller powers, to bring this thing to a conclusion. We were allies, working together, and together we made it work.

So, lets all get off the bullcrap about who did what for who, and learn to appreciate the fact that, as allies we have a strong alliance. One that few will stand up against!

Well, I am an American and I have not argued with the Brits very much as I think they are very good allies of the USA. WW2 was a mutual victory. You Brits, stood up to the Nazis and engaged them until the USA could produce the war materials the allies needed and train our armed forces to where the allies could start to defeat the Nazis.True, the isolationists in the USA were ruling the political roost and even though FDR wanted to join with the Brits, his hands were politically tied. To me this is all the truth and not subject to argument. Also, there were thousands of brave men and women for the Brits AND the USA that gave their lives to win this war. Bush, is an honorable man. He has made many mistakes, but they were honest mistakes. He has his faults but he TRULY has the welfare of the USA AND the free world at heart. To hate him for making mistakes is a gross error on any one's part. His political enemies have used anything that they could paint as a negative against him which causes reactions of hatred, as yours. What he needs, and the USA needs is for all of us to pull together and try to win this "war on terror"

You are probably right about pearl harbor , if had not been attacked it would have been much harder to convince the american people that it was in our interest to get in a war halfway across the world.
The part about "saving" the brits is because it is absolute truth...if the US hadn't gotten involved western europe would've been eventually destroyed by the germans as the only country besides US that was able to stand up to them was the russians so without US western europe would be either german or russian today.
As for the arguing so much , I don't think we do....obviously everyone has differences of opinion sometimes but overall we get along fine . You are obviously entitled to your opinion on Pres. Bush and anyone for that matter ...however , most americans disagree as he was elected twice.

FDR tried very hard to keep America out of the war. Good for him. Nobody want to go to war if it can be avoided. He did all he could to help us with the materiel of war.Churchill was pleased about Pearl Harbour in that it forced the USA into the war. Read some more history books, watch the entire TV series "World at War". Thanks to the USA (late, brash, gung-ho or not) our Mother tongue is English and not German or Russian. We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude, and I have never heard any American with an attitude such as you describe. I did meet a couple of old Air Force guys who were pretty p###ed off at having to do daylight raids over occupied Europe but that's about all. Argue? Don't think we do, do we? Finally don't bother with Ill-informed or un-educated people who don't know the difference between 'there' 'their' and 'they're'. Let's be thankful they're not in the Diplomatic Corps!!

Why do you fuel the fire and start a chain of replies to your post that will either be Americans defending their character or Brits whining about how rotten Americans are?

Don't pretend to be so neutral.

For the record, there are plenty of things I find annoying about the Brits too. I lived there for several years. Ever live in America?
