The surface area of every sheet in the entire bundle would be much higher. Allowing 0.004 inch for the edge area, the effective size of each sheet is 8.504 x 11.004. Multiplying this by 1000 (two sides to each sheet) we get 93578.016 square inches.

For normal caclulations you might assume the paper to be flat, giving surface area: 8.5*11*2*500=93,500

I guess if you include the width of the paper as a surface then u can get this answer:

500 sheets have width 2 inches, so each sheet has width 2/500 inches=1/250 inches. so each sheet has surface area: 2*(8.5*(1/250)+11*(1/250))+2*8.5*11=0.068+0.088+187=187.156 = X

so 500 sheets have 500*X surface area = 93,578

The bundle has 6 faces. Opposite faces have same area.
Surface area=2[8.5*11+11*2+8.5*2]
=2[93.5+22+17]=265sq in

2 of the side faces: 2 * 8.5 * 2 = 34

The other 2 side faces: 2 * 11 * 2 = 44

Total area: 93.5 + 17 + 22 = 265 sq in.

8.5 * 11 = 93.5 sq in (# sheets and height of stack are irrelevant to surface area calculation)
