We don't need nuclear weapons. We have bombs, missiles, tanks, mortars, grenades, high powered rifles, machine guns, etc. They all do plently of damage.

You can't just simply send infafntry in when the enemy is threatening to or is using nuclear weapons. Probably the most likely way to avoid nuclear war is to have the crosshairs to our nuclear weapons pointed right at their heads.

Mutually assured destruction was what kept the US and the USSR from bombing the planet to oblivion in the cold war.

The best thing for the US will be to get rid of its nuclear arsenal. Then other nuclear powers would do the same, for the sake of peace. After all, nobody wants cities in his country to be destroyed.

It doesn't work with unstable regimes like Iran and North Korea
they aren't rational they are quite willing to call your bluff.
