Nineteen ninety nine is actually short for Nineteen hundred and ninety nine. So the next number following 1,999 is 2,000 (Two Thousand) A century is 100 years. The twentieth Century ended(the 1900's)and we are now living in the 21st Century (2,000's) 1 ad - 100 ad = first century 10l ad - 200 ad = 2nd century. etc etc etc.

When you say 1999 as "nineteen hundred and ninety-nine", you are saying there are 19 sets of one-hundred year periods, plus 99 years more. Alternatively, you can say "one thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine" and still be techinically correct.
To say "twenty hundred" for 2000 would be nonsensical

Are you talking about the pronounciation of the year or the spelling of each? 1999 is One thousand ninehundred and ninetynine. when referring to the year it's just nineteen ninety nine because is faster and easier to pronounce.

In the early 1900's they actually said nineteen hundred and four or whatever year. Then it was easier to say nineteen fifty five. It will catch on in the 21st century too. We just have to stay strong. Times will change. Keep fighting the good fight!
