An attractive woman from New York was driving through a remote part of Texas when her car broke down. An Indian on horseback came along and offered her a ride to a nearby town. She climbed up behind him on the horse and they rode off. The ride was uneventful except that every few minutes the Indian would let out a whoop so loud that it would echo from the surrounding hills.

When they arrived in town, he let her off at the local service station, yelled one final, "Yahoo!" and rode off.

"What did you do to get that Indian so excited?" asked the service station attendant.

"Nothing," shrugged the woman, " I merely sat behind him on the horse, put my arms around his waist, and held onto his saddle horn so I wouldn't fall off."

"Lady," the attendant said, "Indians ride bareback..."

English is FUN! And it will make you a better rider no matter what discipline you end up choosing. You will probably be mounting from a mounting block or have a leg up. English stirrups are shorter and it is harder for you to mount from the ground. The movement can also be not good for the horse's back. The saddle will be a lot different. Again, no horn. There may or may not be knee pads/blocks. Many people like them because it makes their leg more secure and for some people (like me) makes it a lot easier on your hips and knees. If there is no knee block (the proper term has escaped me) then no problem, you'll just be building a better leg and balance. English horses are also direct rein, and most use some form of snaffle bit as opposed to curb. Snaffle is a little lighter in their mouth. You will be using a lot more leg than you're used to for posting, 2-point (jumping position), sitting trot, and a lot more leg cues. Whether or not you will be jumping, 2-point is a really good exercise, so don't be surprised when/if your trainer instructs you to do so. What to wear? if it's your first time, then wear your western boots and jeans. Bring your helmet if you have one (I am a freak about having my own helmet!) Don't worry about buying breeches (tight fitting riding pants) or boots (either paddock (short) boots with half chaps or field (tall) boots) unless you decide to stick with it. Relax and have fun! You shouldn't be doing anything super technical on your first lesson. I switched from western to english. It took a little getting used to, but I was hooked at the first lesson! Good luck and have fun!
