The oil light can come on for several reason, for instance your oil level is too low or the oil pressure is too low.
Check you oil level using the dip stick and if the oil is within the correct level, you will be fine to drive for another week or so without causing any damage what so ever.
If however you find there to be no oil, DO NOT use the car as this will cause permanent damage and can even cause the engine to cease (which will then cost you the price of a new engine + labour to fit it).
you may find its just a bit low and needs a top up.
Good luck!

Why would you wait for the light to come on to change the oil? Unless your car has an oil light to tell you when the oil is due, this is very bad! I know BMWs will tell you when they need a change but for the rest of us the oil light means you need actual oil in you tank because that light is indicating the amount not the cleanliness. Add a quart if you can't wait but don't drive it anymore if the oil is low, do you know how to check your oil on the dipstick? Make sure there is at least the minimum before driving it or you will seize your engine!

Be more specific with Year/Make/Model,
The key element here is when was the last oil change? mileage/ and/or date? how is the oil level in your Engine? I'm assume that your checked that.
If it is an older Car, if the oil light comes on, chances are damage is already done to your Engine, have someone check it out ASAP.
If the newer Car, the light comes on on a cycle, meaning weather the you need it or not, the cycle it set on ether calendar date or mileage.

If it is a "change oil light", then that is not a big deal b/c it is programmed to come on at a certain mileage. They usually reset it when you get the oil changed and comes on again in 3000 miles. If it is the "oil light", that means your oil is low and you need to add some immediately.

Put some oil in her until next week. put a litre in if you dont know what your doing as you don't want to overfill her but this will tide you over so you don't do any damage. Once she's lubricated you can bring her in when you have time. I believe the light is low oil, i've never heard of a car ask for an oil change. Check using the dipstick, remove - wipe - reinsert - remove - read oil level off stick

Newer cars have a service reminder light that runs by the odometer. It is not an indication that something is going to blow up. Get an oil change when you are free, the car will wait (as long as it's not too long).

The Change oil light means you should get it serviced as soon
as possible... This does not mean your oil level is low even though you should check your level at least once a week or suffer
engine damage...

You need to check your oil now and add some until you can get the oil change....Sometimes you'll have to add oil in between oil changes because you may leak a little or burn a little just driving it. You definitely don't want to drive your car when it's low so just check it and add some till you get in next week. Good luck!

Check your oil level to make sure you have plenty of oil. You will be ok untill next week as far as the oil change but don't let your oil level get too low.......
