I have an Empire natural gas heater and the pilot won't stay lit. The manual says to call a technician, but I was wondering if anyone had ideas that I could try first.

2 simple things, the pilot may not be strong and needs cleaning, or the thermocouple [the copper sensor that lays in the pilot flame] may be bad and needs replacing. It's only one or the other.

Probably the thermocouple. The tc is the thing with the elongated bulb that is postioned right by the pilot and has a wire running down to the gas regulator. It ensures that the pilot is lit or else it will shut off the gas. If it goes bad, you can light the pilot by pushing the button (to override it) but it will immediately (or soon thereafter) shut the gas off again. I know of no way to test them other that replacing it and see if it works then. They aren't very expensive so it may be worth it to try. It may save you the cost of a repairman.
