I also have a 16 year old brother and have now given up trying to find something for him and just give him the cash. He prefers it as he is usually saving up for something that is too big for us to buy him (XBox 360, very expensive cricket bat, internet filthetc).
Or just ask him, 16 year olds don't care about surprises but will probably have a specific game/DVD/cd that he really wants.

Well you can buy him what he probably wants or you can buy him something legal like a games console - although that depends if you want him to have a life! If he's into music buy him a guitar and a book of songs for his favourite band(s). If you buy an amp make sure it's got a head phone socket! Yamaha make the best value for money guitars out there and do starting packs that are well worth it. A Pacifica will do the job no matter what kind of music he's into.

if you don't want to spend too much i.e an xbox why not buy him a pro-owned Nintendo game cube or a brand new Nintendo DS, you can play the game boy advance games on them to.
the game cube is around £40
the DS around £95
or you could buy him an ipod shuffle for around £55, or if you really don't want to spend that much on him, you could download the latest version of itunes soft ware (itunes 7.1) for free and then buy him a music credit for either £15 or £25 then he gets to pick the music he likes.
Theres also really good smaller presents on the gadgetshop website.

A musical instrument, a book, a cool phone, a few numbers from ex-girfriends, some porn, a hooker, there's a lot of stuff...
Besides, at that age, you'll forget it by the next morning
