Sea Lions are very much creatures of the open oceans. They only gather in huge colonies on land during mating season. The females have their pups from the season before and go in to heat immediately after wards, in order to mate again.

When mating season is over they return to the open ocean to feed. The females and males will not feed at all or very little during mating season.

There was this one marine biologist (can't remember his name) that attached a small computer to the back of a male sea lion. (do not try that trick at home, a sea lion will take your arm off.) The purpose of this tube with the computer chip was to monitor the sea lion's behavior in the open ocean. When the sea lion returned the following year to mate as usual, he retrieved his computer and discovered some very interesting data. The sea lion would rest in the deep ocean 20 to 30 minutes at a time when tired and then surface for air. The sea lion traveled well over a thousand miles (can not remember the exact number) and dived down almost a mile deep in to the ocean. Up until then, little was known about the sea lions open ocean behavior.

Apparently, they are very much adapted to the sea.

Good Luck and Take Care
