Vodou is an monotheistic religion that focuses on honoring your ancestors, serving the lwa(elevated spirits), and honoring Bondye(God). To clear up a common misconception. We do not think of the lwa as Gods. There is only one God and he goes by the name of Bondye or Good God.
In Vodou we honor our ancestors because they have our best interest in mind. They are our blood and with them we would not be here. The idea is why go to a stranger for help when your family is right there for you. Honoring your ancestors is the first thing you learn about when starting in the religion.
After you have worked with your ancestors you then learn about the lwa. We serve the lwa and the lwa serve us. The lwa are elevated spirits that are chosen to help us by Bondye (God). The reason is Bondye is very distant from us and because he is so distant we do not worship him like other religions do. We do understand that without Bondye nothing would be here. We acknolwledge Bondye but do not have fets (service) for him.
Everyone has a met tet (master of the head). This lwa is the one that chosen you from birth. Your met tet is the lwa that will work the hardest and fastest for you. The met tet is determined through a reading done by a Mambo (priestess) or Hougan (Priest). With your met tet come your escort lwa that walk with your met tet. Again they will also work the hardest and fastest for you.
There are many many lwa and there are many many new ones all the time. I will include a website that explains a little about some of the major lwa. I have personally worked with this Mambo and she is a great and knowledgable Mambo with alot of konesans (experience). It is a Haitian based Vodou house in the U.S. Have fun and enjoy the reading !

My knowlege of voodoo is what I see in the movies, so I can't make an assessment based on that information

if you do not believe in voodoo ..that is fine but read up on the wick n reed and it may change your mind ...yes I believe with proven reason toO
