I dont know what your definition of cheap is .....
I live in Vancouver, just a few blocks from Burnaby, and we pay $500 a month for a large 1 bdrm apt, all utilities, cable, internet and laundry facilities included. Granted it's a basement suite ... but we have our own yard and its not bad. For the area, that is quite inexpensive. I know people in smaller apartments in outlying areas like abbotsford who pay more.

So, bottom line, if you look hard and have a bit of luck, yes you can find a decent deal. Again, depends on what YOUR definition of cheap is ... if you are looking for something for $400 or less, dream on .... even a room in a pension hotel costs that.

There are no cheap places to live in BC until after the 2010 Olympics. I have 2 sisters that live in a small town in the Kootenays and since the announcement was made that Vancouver would be hosting the 2010 Games, nothing has been cheap. You might , however, find something cheaper than the rest if you don't mind living in a really rural area.

Cheap in what way? Cost of living or cost of purchasing a home? If you want to live in Skidegate, there are low cost homes, but the cost of living is a little higher. There are a few places in the West Kootenays, and up around the Bulkley Valley area that are reasonable in cost but close enough to a big-ish city that you can get whatever you need without heading down to the Lower Mainland.

Well some towns aren't too expensive but you may not find work there or want to live there. I grew up in BC and went to Alberta because there were no jobs. Prince George isn't very expensive but it smells like the pulp mill and it is a very depressing place but there are some okay ski hills if you can stand -40. I spent my teen years in Kamloops which is beautiful but no work. Again good ski hills. Kelowna is a bit bigger but slightly more expensive.

does such a place exist in BC anymore? not only is it the province of choice for young professionals looking for a more laid back ocean-side life but its also the top retiree choice for the entire country.

some of my favorite lines from the movie The Money Pit:

Tom Hanks: "yeah, well I used to pay $350 a month back in college for a loft in [Greenwich Village] but I'm sure its gone up since then.."

His Realtor: "$350 a month huh? wow... what I guess Eisenhower was president then huh.."

Dream on my friend! You're pretty much 30 years too late.

I don't know about most places to live in BC as I've only lived mainly in Vancouver, but it is quite expensive unfortunately. I mainly rented in the east side because it was cheaper there. However, the east side is more multicultural and the I prefer the people, they're not as stuck up as some of the rich west siders!

Any place that isn't in the Vancouver area is pretty cheap. Vancouver Island is also pretty pricey from what I hear. Basically you're going to be in the boonies. :)
