Because you are experiencing hormonal changes. This is the same kind of thing as when people might notice that a post-period woman is easily irritable, and they say she is suffering from PMS. This can also cause changes in things like your appetite, and is completely normal. Changes like this don't always have to happen after, it is also possible for you to experience this before.

Your hormones may be out of balance a little bit. If they are, it can affect you seratonin levels which causes your appetite to also be off. You may crave carbs when you shouldn't or feel like you're starving when you're not. Next time you visit the doc, I would mention it to him/her just to see what their take on it is. I had a friend who did acupuncture to deal with a hormonal imbalance and it worked.

I get this aswell! I find it strange that some of my girlfriends do have a bigger appetite around this time, others don't notice any change at all.
To answer your Q, just before we get our period, our metabolic rate increases. This means that we burn through the food we eat much quicker.

I believe its due to the increase of oestrogen in your body over these days, when you are on the pill you often have an increased appetite due to more oestrogen and this is the same concept :)

Because the body cues us when we need something. Added calories are needed for the increase in metabolism required for menstruation and for the manufacture of hormones
