well the mechanic you talked to probally screwed you cause synthetic oil is great on new engines that has only 1 oil change yours however has old oil in the metals and are not to mixed and the synthetic will eat the old deposits that the old engine uses to its advantage to run now, another words your engine adapts to the old deposits to seal things that are worn out like where your valves seat,etc..you can go with a heay oil 10 40w but to hevy and use lucas oil treatment, you really need to rering her and freshen the bottom end!!!

Burning oil at that rate, it is foolhardy to spend the money on either synthetic oil or even oil changes (your car changes it own oil by default every 1600-2000 miles). What you need is to purchase the cheapest oil you can find. I would use a straight weight like 30W or 40W. If you can find a brand that is made from recycled oil, that would be even better (cheaper).

You shouldn't use a heavier oil if you live in a cool/cold climate or you could really damage your engine. Maybe you should switch mechanics? If you put a quart of oil in your car every week, it doesn't seem safe to drive, especially since you travel long distances.

Don't buy the most expensive oil on the market, but what ever you choose, go with a heavier weight, such as a 40 wt. oil, it will burn slower.

Stock up on the cheapest stuff until you can find another car. Otherwise you'll be burning money.
