I think Phantom of the Opera, but I am one of those who actually read the book before i saw the last version. I cried when they were on the roof.

I agree, Phantom of the Opera. Or Amedeus, I love both of 'em.

Hair, Grease, All That Jazz are nearly, if not, 30 years old. The question is for musicals in the past TWENTY years. Grease is hands-down the winner by all accounts if you go back that far. Going back 20 though, I would definantly say 'Hedwig And The Angry Inch' movie captured exactly the momentum of the broadway musical. Most musicals don't play well as movies. Hedwig surpassed the original musical by all means.

never saw phantom, but also loved Amadeus. If u want ot go back farther, All That Jazz was excellent, but in a much different way.
