if a window pops up saying windows media cant support or play this file it is in a format or copy protected so u cant hear it. if u are using a file sharing program like lime wire u take that risk because the record comapnies put dummy files in there so as to discourage ppl not to download illegal music. So unfortunatly there sint anythin u can do except search till u get the song that will play. also if u are downloading WMA files that might alos be ur problem check the Mp3 or Wma status because Wma is of lessor quality and may not play in windows media player

If they won't play in media player, then something is wrong. Possibly they're not actually mp3 files, and someone has taken another filetype, and just written .mp3 on the end. Or maybe when it downloaded it lost the .mp3 at the end, and you need to put it back into the filename.

Go into a folder. On the Toolbar at the top go: Tools>Folder Options, then click on the View tab. Scroll down to Hide Extensions for Known Filetypes, and make sure it is unticked. You can then see what filetype your downloaded files are. If the filename ends .mp3 then it should be working.

Either the files you've downloaded are corrupt or you may need windows media player updating.
You could always download a different media player such as winamp.

Look for the file extension eg .mp3 .wma .dat .ini .dll etc, google it and it should come up with the codec's (translator programs that ur pc uses to understand and play a file)

Extension should be viewable with a right click on the file and scroll down to properties.

Hope this is helpful
