Hello Sassy2sloppy,

I am sorry to hear about these troubles, but to me the opinion of your general practitioner sounds very realistic. Getting rid of ingrown nails is sometimes a hell of a job ... nevertheless: proper medical treatment can deal and heal the pain very efficiently.

I suggest you to become a little more aware of the nail troubles which have become your daily 'friend' ;-)

You can search for relevant sources from The HandResearch Nail Encyclopedia at:

Don't underestimate you doctor's advice.

Best wishes from The Netherlands! Martijn.

Well, young and old people get in-grown toenails. It is not really age specific.
The type of medication they give you is special. They will inject medicine to provide you with a nerve block, which deadens the nerve. This is very different from local pain injection, which does not affect the nerve.
After your nerve block, they will remove the toenail and finally use a substance to kill the base of your nailbed so that the toenail will not grow back.
Pain should be gone in 2-3days max. Results are usually good.
Make sure you go over everything with your MD.

A lot of old people have this operation, it's nothing major, just enough to make most people cringe. It will be a bit tender but people have a lot worse and don't get much pain relief. I had pins put in my finger and a wire wrapped round the joint and some bone fused and they only gave me paracetomol!
