do they have to have very clean water, or are they found in polluted water?
No i am not thinking of getting one i know that they are protected!
It is just that i know a pond where many newts live and the water looks so murky- i wondered how delicate they are, and do they tend to live in ponds where fish live too?

It is an old wives tale that having a newt in your pump/tap water means it's pure and drinkable.
It is also true they (like all amphibians) are susceptible to pollutants through their porous skin. I have seen them twice in the wild, around a densely populated city. Both times the water was pure and clean.
As an amateur naturalist, I do know they prefer clear mountain streams (at least most of the species).
They live in ponds/streams with fish, and often eat them. They do not often get eaten in return though being highly toxic.

Well, they like very shallow small ponds but this is really used for breeding purposes. They lay their eggs on grass they find in these shallow ponds and once they hatch and grow up they will move out of the pond and hide in cracks of earth/stones for the winter mohths. I think a small garden pond would do.
