There are some grocery stores who call the homeless shelters and donate their day old food really early in the morning. You're correct, it's not only wasteful to throw away perfectly good food, it makes no sense at all to not want to help people in need!! In restaurant cases, it does have a lot to do with regulations. It's all red tape, as sad as that is.

well i understand the the cook and his staff finish off the left overs instead of throwing them.
but some people do throw out food yes. and they are 2 types:
1-people who have a bunch of expired food that they wanted to sell, not serve on the spot, and they could send it to the homeless i agree but wouldn't that cause them food-poisoning?
2-rich folks who wouldn't allow any person of a lower class feeding on the food they paid for....i doubt they'll mention the homeless then

Restaurants are not allowed to reserve leftovers. In our area, their spare food goes to soup kitchens and homeless shelters.

They Really should do that, i've been thinking that myself. Instead of throwing it away or using it the next day (ew) Give it to a soup kitchen or something! For instance my bro works at a quizno's and they have so much leftover stuff that there not aloud to use the next day so they throw it out!

They should donate it. I think it's terrible how they waste so much food when there are hungry people on the streets. It shouldn't be that way.

Because of liability reasons. It isn't because they don't want to...........you see, if someone gets sick out by eating the food, then they are hold legally responsible. Remember, food can be contaminated. I used to think the same way you did now until I worked in a cafe 9 years ago.

because sometimes the way they cook it or the food that is prepared and then thrown to waste will be rotten within a few hours and will make the consumer sick
