Are "they" medical experts? The chances are that they are not! They cannot argue with a doctors note which is a legal document. I think you will find that in situations of ill health the uni are duty bound to help in any way they can, which may mean physical help or just breaking the exam into smaller parts allowing you rest time.
Don't put off discussing it with the powers taht be, the sooner it is sorted you sooner you can concentrate on getting back to normal.

I once missed 3 mini GCSE french exams, got a doctors note but was not allowed to resit. Instead they said I wouldn't be classed as a 'fail' but could have all the marks already acheived to make a pass grade. This was then a very poor pass as I'd missed 40% of the exams!

Check the policy and then make an informed decision

So long as you have doctors certificate then they should allow you to resit it.

I had this once in my Banking Exams (although I had had a car crash a few days earlier). I sent a copy of the sick note to the examining board and they granted me a resit at the next sessions.

Resit may not be able to take place until November

Call them now and explain the situation.

Take the note to the professor giving the exam. Explain that you physically can not sit for the test duration. Ask if he can place you somewhere in the class room that will allow you to stand or sit as you feel necessary to relieve the back pain. Tell him you're willing to sit/stand facing the corner until the test is completed so you won't have the opportunity to gaze on others papers but still be able to take it.
Or just ask if you can take it at another time, whenever is convenient for him to give it to you.
Believe it or not, they're a lot more forgiving than you think when it comes to medical excuses and notes from doctors.

If you have a doctors note they can't do much about it. Look at their guidlines for this sot of thing though. I would suggest you don't do the exam, if you do it even though you are ill you may not perform as well and they won't increase the marks unless you are very very boarderline. You should be able to take it as a re-sit withut penalty. The main thing is to get in touch with your tutor as a matter of urgency so they are aware of the situatuon. Hope your back feels better soon.

There are two options that I can think of.

1) Turn up to the exam and present your doctors sick note asking the advice of the invigilator.

2) Phone the OU and ask them for advice on what to do. They probably have a procedure for this and the fact that you hve already been to the doctors and have a sick note can only be in your favour.

To be honest I would be on the phone to the OU as soon as possibel, they have thousands of students so you can't be the first one in this situation. If you are a member of the NUS you could ask their advice too, but get onto the OU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Good luck with it all!

With a doctor's note, you should be able to resit. If the pain will take a long to time to resolve, you may be able to contact your university's administration and have someone proctor your exam in an environment that in more comfortable for you.

Good luck.

Speak to your university, you should be able to fill in a Mitigating Circumstances form which will allow you to resit the exam in the future. If you are unwell you can not be expected to sit the exam, it is an unavoidable situation and you shouldn't be penalised for it. Good Luck!

Sit the exam, do what you can hand in the note to the exam board to explain why your performance was maybe below par, espesh if you couldn't sit the whole 3 hours.

- the note will provide extenuating circumstances in the event of your mark being borderline and you may well be bumped up.

Don't turn up and you can use the note for writing a shopping list on...

Best of luck with the exam, btw!

As long as you have a sick note from your doctor they have no reason to refuse you your request to retake the exam.
The doctor would not have given you the note if your back pain was not serious and they would have to respect a professionals advice
