you say its the thermostat, if so would this allow the temp gauge to sit nice at half way and not show signs of overheating? also when it shows its up to temperature on the gauge the cooling fan kicks in!! with a faulty thermostat would this happen??

Yes,

Change it yourself, it is an easy job, it sits in the pipe leading to the radiator.

I used to have a mini, mine went all the time.

Mecanical cars are great I miss them, mine looks like the Bridge of the Star Ship Enterprise if you lift the bonnet nowadays!!

if the cooling fan is running at correct running temperature... then it sounds sort of OK, it might be a gasket gone... when the engine is cool, check for signs of oil in the radiator water and 'mayonnaise' in the oil cap... sure sign of the head gasket gone... check all your hoses take them off, and run them through with water to check for blockages.....

sounds like ur head gasket has gone but hopefully just a pipe/leak or summin x x
