In American schools the students work on a year-long system. Schools open in August or early September and continue for about 180 -190 days of instruction, so they end in late May or June. In elementary schools the students generally stay with a single teacher for the whole year, with some supplementary teachers (such as music, or art or physical education). In middle school (age about 11 to 14) the students usually have different teachers for English, history, math and science as their main courses. The year may be divided into four grading quarters but except for a few minor classes, the main classes continue from the start to the end of the year with the same teacher.

It depends on the part of the country. In the northeast, school traditionally starts the first week day after the first Monday of September (Labor Day). In Florida, it has been starting the first week of August, but now the law was changed that it can't begin until the 18th of August (I believe that's the date). So, there isn't one particular day that school starts. It depends of the school system, which could be run by the town, city, county or state.

School systems that start school before Labor Day are just mean. They are run by evil trolls whose goal is to make kids unhappy and parents miserable.
