It is believed that handshaking originated during the Roman Empire, when people would grasp each other at the elbow rather than the hand as a gesture of trust, showing that they are not carrying any weapons beneath their sleeves.

It just a form of greeting someone, we could hug or kiss on the cheek but that would be too personal. I personally am not a fan of hand shaken, Ive seen too many woman over the years leave the loo without washing there hand, that is so unbelievably dirty, and I understand its worse for men..... Just think the next time your shaking hands with some dude the last place he probably touched was his d1ck!!!

I think it derives from the Europeans in the ancient days. When different groups of people were fighting and called a truce, they would shake hands to show that they will no longer fight and never bring up that issue again. It's like a showing a sign of peace.

It began with showing a person that we are not armed (carrying a weapon). It happens today to show people that we are glad to meet them.
