The head teacher is responsible for the running of the school on a day to day basis. He/she is must utilise the available resources on behalf of the governors (eg. finance, staff) in order to provide an effective education for the children at the school.

At our school, it's known as the "lead" teacher. They're the one that is basically the principal when the principal is absent. They usually have more experience and an advanced degree.

Good question - basically they are there to see tat their pupils get a good education and that there staff uphold the standards and practices as set out in the schoolteachers' burgundy book
