Yes Columbus day is a national holiday,which is celebrated today on Monday ,banks and post offices are closed as well.

I don't think all schools take this day as a holiday. Both of my daughter's have today off. While their cousin, who attends school in the same state but about4 hrs away, does. I guess it depends on the individual school districts, I'm not really sure how it works.

it's not an official school holiday. but some school districts choose to let their students have a day off that day so there's actually a day off in october. =]

According to my daughter's school system, it is -- although I think it's officially an "in-service" day, meaning that kids are off, but teachers and other staff meet to work.
