How do I go about opening a Swiss bank account without having to go to Switzerland and without paying some broker hundreds of pounds to do it for me?

Well, this is absolutely NOT possible without paying a few hundreds of setup fee.

Even if you appear in person in a Swiss bank, the non-resident fees/deposits might be much higher than that.

One of the cheapest options is about 450 BP in fees and 2500 BP in deposits. Check this link: http://swiss-bank-accounts.com/e/index.html

You should be able to set-up a Swiss bank account by mailing an application to them. Contact the bank directly and ask for details. Since you are a non resident of Switzerland they will probably require a hefty deposit. You can get a basic account for about 5000 Fr, but to get a numbered account then get ready to hand over 100,000 Fr.

If you have enough money to open a Swiss bank account....you probably have more than enough money to buy a plane ticket to Zurich.

I think it is very hard, if the fees are only a few hundred pounds, do it. Or come over for a visit and do it then.
