Its a sort of tribal thing .. like a sports rivalry .. by this I mean that the 'average' person will make jokes at the other sides expense.
There are always some moronic nutters who will go to violent extremes and use this 'hatred' as an excuse to get themselves off in whatever twisted way suits them best (ie gang beating the 'opposition')
The majority (thank god) just laugh about it and move on.

There is a long history there.
But you have to remember that the Scots hate the British the way that Bostonians hate Yankee fans -- not the way that Bin Laden hates the US.
