Some people work at night and sleep during the day. Like Doctors

This habit started even before humans evolved because apes (our ancestors) are not able to see properly in the night (And so do v). Since they couldn't see properly, the best thing to do was 'sleep'. So we got the habit from the apes.
(Even if one wanted to stay up in the night, he would have been left alone, coz others apes would still be sleeping)
But since in the modern world we have electric lights and we have found other people who r willing to stay up in the night, some of us do work in the night and sleep the whole day.
But still 99.9% people in the world sleep through the night and work thru the day.
This is actually a habit rather than a body requirement, which was not their when v wer infants. This is evident from the fact that infants can sleep the whole day and stay up the whole night (Though the fact that they got nothing to do the whole day other than sucking on nipples should also b considered)

Earlier no electricity. Except a few like criminals all others were sleeping. That habit continued. Now our soft ware engineers are working especially at our nights because it is day for their bosses on the other side of the earth

Like many animals, we evolved that way. Our ancestors didn't have the benefits of electric lights. Since we could see better during the day it became natural for us to sleep when it was dark and be active when it was light. It became part of our genetic make up. While the tendency to sleep at night can be overcome, if necessary, for shiftworkers, etc., left to our own devices, most of us will revert to that schedule.

If you are referring to primitive man, it may have been a safety concern. In our modern world people like myself adapt to working at night by sleeping during the day in a very dark room. I don't know if you have ever tried to sleep in the bright sun, it is difficult.
