I don't believe in sexual orientation. I believe in God. I'm a christian and I know that some people respect my beliefs, but don't accept them and don't want to me to talk about, because it doesn't make sense in their lives. I guess people need to identify themselves with a particular belief system.

Fear. . . .some people are afraid of what they don't understand. As a result, they will reject any belief or idea that does not conform to what they consider normal.
With regards to sexual orientation, there is the much taughted debate...are you born with your orientation or is it a choice that is made? Either way, the result scares small minded straight people.

Self Preservation.
We are all the stars in our own show. We are all right in our own minds. We are all the smartest person in the room. Our priorities are the most important. But we don't all think the same way. Sometimes our own views conflict with one another.
Our views are formed mostly by the way we are raised in our early childhood. We see things our parents say/do/believe, as normal and the way everyone sees/does/believes. When we grow up and see more of the world, we continue to grow and some of our views are either changed or reinforced.
Commonly amongst religious people, (especially Catholic) people are raised to think a certain way. Others (aetheists, agnostics, etc) are more accepting. Unitarian Universalists do not have a creed or doctrine. They do not all believe the same way. They repect and tolerate diversity. They encourage it.
That is why people who have controversial ideas or preferences are welcome in a Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Actually, all are welcome but the self-righteous.
So people in general sometimes have a problem with the way others dress, what they do for a living, how they raise their children, what they believe, what they stand for. We all come from different backgrounds an conditioning. We live in a free (mostly) nation. We just have to accept that some people are not as accepting or tolerant as others. We need to pary for them (for those of us who are religious), love them anyway, and forgive them.
One thing is certain. We should never impose our own views on others. We may try to explain or persuede others, but never expect them to believe as we do. And we shouldn't show contempt ro condscend to anyone who believes differently.

Some people are completely unwilling to accept that they are wrong, or that all they were raised to believe could be wrong. Especially with sexual orientation issues in modern society; it has always been man and a woman - not really, but that's how they see it - and that's how it will always be for them. It's completely "wrong" otherwise.

Only if we don't fully understand them. ;)
For some people even if they logically understand them, they might not emotionally do. They might have gone through some trauma or bad experience in their past and may be automatically be close-minded to not understanding. There's also other factors such as upbringing, tradition, religion and culture. If the society they live in doesn't accept those kinds of people, they may just "go with the flow" in order to fit in even if they may not believe the same so they won't be looked down upon. Usually, if it's something new that when it is hard for people to accept and believe.

Most people have such a deep belief in their own ways of thinking that it prevents them from accepting others ways or beliefs. If they are deeply religious they generally can't accept people that have alternative sex lives because they were taught that it is wrong in the eyes of God. Personally I believe in Live and Let Live.

fear of being considered to be same like them, intolerance, immature thinking...I think we get adult and wise in the moment we start to respect other people's beliefs, habits, the way the are whether their ways of being are same like ours or totally different. And you know what's funny? At least 99% of the people who don't want to accept other people's sexual orientation or beliefs or etc.probably never even met somebody who is for example gay or has a different religion or etc......they just know it from TV...This is an amazing example of a person with open and tolerant mind...
I have bunch of gay friends and my mother used to say "how can you be friends with them?" and I said "Did you ever meet them?"..she asked me to introduce her to a few of my gay friends. It was at least 5 or 7 years ago.Till this day she goes out with them, they go shopping,to restaurants,to bars, they go to our place for dinner, they give each other X-mas presents...One of them calls her "my new mother" because his family didn't accept the way he was.I am big time proud of my mother who wasn't scared to meet them and get to know them.

because, despite all the propaganda that has been going on in media, that the world is becoming one small village, we as humans are becoming more cocooned and isolated in our own beliefs and cultures, we are closing doors to human communications, we have practically split the whole world into religious sectors and we are happy slashing out stupid ignorant judgments on others left and right.
