Firstly, does anyone know whether it was just an atomic weapon, or whether they've actually produced a thermonuclear weapon?

Secondly, does anyone know the estimated yield of this weapon?

Sorry, I should say "device" rather than "weapon".

Mmm... 15kilotons, eh?

Looks like just an atomic device then. Let's hope that they're not just testing detonators for hydrogen bombs!

It was not a thermonuclear device, just a fission bomb. It was detonated underground, and Russia got the best recordings of the subsequent seismic event. There was only one test, but it's power was misreported at first. The Russians initially stated that it had a yield of 0.55 ktons, but now say that it was somewhere between 5 and 15 ktons.

It's an underground nuclear bomb test the power of which is about a small earthquark of 4 Ricther Scale, enough to bring the world to take serious note of N.K power although N.K. still need sometime to be able to arm their missile with this nuclear warhead.

Our neighbor in Asia has just joined the powerful nuclear club and is able to give us a blow out punch if they choose to and we are unable to do anything about it.

Now, nobody would look down on them, which some did like with China 20 years ago. Anyway, we already have 8 nuclear power and the world is still "OK". Another one is not going to make a big difference except the balance of political power has slightly shifted. US & the Western world has a tougher game to play.

Like you, I have only what I heard on the morning news today.
The world intelligence agencies seem to believe that N.K. has the capacity to develop a nuclear bomb. The yield was estimated to be in the area of 500+ tons. It's not comforting to even suspect that the lunatic leader of N.K. has this kind of fire-power.
PS: I didn't hear about the second bomb as reported by another poster to your question.
