"Per Aspera Ad Astra" generally translates as "through difficulties to the stars"

"Per Aspera Ad Astra" is the motto of NASA, the South African Air Force, Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, NJ), Cornelia Strong College (University of North Carolina) and many more.

Note that "asper" has a slightly different meaning depending on context:
rough
bitter (taste)
harsh (sound)
severe (weather)
violent (people)
savage (animals)
difficult (circumstances)
