it was Socrates who said that. i know it sounds so naive, but why don't people act "good"? Is it a deliberate choice on their part to simply ignore doing good because it takes effort? or is it because of ignorance? i know im making a hasty generalization, but what works for you?

Courage: you forgot the group that actually "know what is good and do good as well"

Dongerald: is it really the personalities or is it the character of the person? and aren't there are "universal good"?

Jerry: quite true.

Simplysim: i think it was Socrates or Aristotle who said that we do things, even though it might harm us, due to our ignorance...because if we truly know the consequences of our acts, we wouldn't do them at all.

It's not a matter of doing, it's a matter of seeking. Seek the good, and you'll find it. You can find the bad just as well.( An example can be found here, indike 111, do you ever give good answers?)

An awful lot of problems in our society come from drugs and alcohol; way more than you might think.

The majority of murders, theft, vandalism. Poverty in general in the USA is in large part do to addictions. People do not work who are addicted. Women have more babies in those communities with high unemployment, both in and out of wedlock.

I don't think these are born to be BAD people, but the general environment is bad, whether you are in a ghetto or mansion , when drugs take over. And for some groups in our society, the larger percentage of addiction, crime, arrests and confinement is going on generation after generation.

There will be no quick fixes, but until this root cause is under control these same groups will sink lower and lower. Throwing money at the problem, which is spent on crack sure isn't helping; blaming the problems on racial prejudice sure isn't getting things done.

It is upsetting to say the least. If it is true then there must be an awful lot of ignorance about regarding what is good and what is not. On the other hand, if we assume that there are a lot of people who know what is good but who do not actually do good it makes the world seem inhabited with terrible people.

Basically this quote seems to give two options, neither of which is positive, either we do not know what good is or we just choose not to do good.

hey..

i don't agree.i think Socrates was taking 'goodness' of people for granted. don't circumstances play a part in dictating people's choices. people commit crimes...is it because they don't know that they are wrong or that they don't care, or that they can't do anything else. and what id 'good' anyway...is it good for one's own self, good of society as a whole...because those two also conflict a lot of times..

We are all born with a lot of different personalities. What's good for one person is not good for another. Just because you know what is good > or bad doesnot mean that you will act that way. Thedevil knows good.

If it's true,it surely doesn't mean he who knows(or assumes,in most cases) what's 'right', will do good.

It's deeper than that,He who truly knows what is good, will do good. What contradicts that?

my best interests might be at odds with yours & my actions will appear as good to me but bad to you. I think that we know right from wrong but need to fulfil ourselves & it often happens at someone's expense.
