It would be more cost effective. Long term incarseration was first brought to us by the Puritians, it hasn't worked, publically televise executions, bring back lashings etc, and then a deterant is in effect. Keeping a human in a cage forever is cruel and costly, banishment and corporal punishment is much more effective, send some to Cuba , Castro did that to us!

Our criminal justice system needs to have punishments that are deterrents to crime. 30 years in prison to someone who has nothing is not a deterrent -- 30 years of free rent, food, clothing and medical care is a gift.
Prison should be just that -- prison. I fight tooth and nail to keep food on the table, and a roof over my family's head, but my tax dollars are spent to feed and clothe many who flagrantly disregarded the law.
The punishment should fit the crime, and the whiners who go on and on about "fair treatment" for criminals need to find another hobby. If the justice system would actually punish crimes, it would work much better. I'm sure that all the murderers who are living off the taxpayers did not give a thought to giving their victims "fair treatment".

Unfortunately, the liberals, who cry rivers for murderers, rapists, and child molesters would never let that happen. They like seeing people like that set free to do it again, because they do not care about innocent victims. That's the reason long-term incarceration does not work. Liberals felt that people that commit hideous crimes are entitled to free gyms, free Internet, free cable, etc. So prison is no longer a punishment for what someone chose to do. It is long term, a long term, totally taken care of situation.

I do not believe in capital punishment - miscarriages of justice and all that. Throw them in jail - who cares if the jails are overcrowded, prisoners should not have the same human rights as the rest of us.

It's the same in most countries, they should definatley consider castration for any sex crime, although I still don't think it will work, you have the death sentance in USA, but it still isn't a deterrant.

Bringing back the chain gang would probably be enough to make prison back into a place nobody wanted to be.
