Someone with their head up their *ss. Somme was a disaster! A poorly planned and executed campaign that was typical of the wasteful battles of that war that slaughtered thousands of soldiers needlessly.

The Somme was a very bloody battle but it was a victory for both England and France. But it taught many use full things. The inflexible generals were replaced with adaptable forward thinking commanders . Also it taught us how to fight the Germans a very hard and bloody lesson but one well learnt,
Psychologically it was a victory before then the Germans held the untried conscript army in contempt( till then the troops they had faced were mostly pros) and thought they would be easily beat. The determination of those men in that battle sent a strong message to the Germans that there time was up. How ever if the USA hadn't been so shy about joining in it may never have happened
