Its library (destroyed early centuries AD) was the greatest in ancient times.It was a commercial and transportation center and a leading port.It was the capital of Ptolemies.Alexandria became the largest city in the Mediterranean basin.It was the link between Greece and the Nile valley.There was a great university that attracted many scholars including Aristarchus of Samothrace, the collator of the Homeric texts; Euclid, the mathematician; and Herophilus, the anatomist, who founded a medical school there.
